This was written for the Express and Echo, but was...
This article was intended for last week’s Express and Echo. My Dad noticed that I made even less sense than usual! Here’s what it was meant to say!
Protest is a word that’s being used a lot at the moment. The Occupiers on the Cathedral Green are being told to move as I write. Also, it’s the first anniversary of those in Egypt who stood up against the President and caused his...

thecutupsfromexeter:
Our friend Franz Nicolay, who’s here on tour at the moment has made our year by recording some piano, organ and synth for our new lp! If you do know him, you should definitely check out his records, particularly Luck & Courage. Franz used to be in a band called The Hold Steady. We’re having a good time with him and Peter Miles in the studio!

What would Jesus, Canon of St Paul's, do?
I’ve been thinking about the issue around St Paul’s Cathedral and the Occupy protests. I was looking at the “What would Jesus do?” banners and thinking about how he might deal with the issues and red tape that Giles Fraser faced. And the only answer I can possibly find is that there’s no way Jesus’ church would ever have become about meeting and processes, and...

Rioting and Solutions
As a Christian, as a punk, as a 21st century counter-culturalist, and as a human being, I have to insist that active non-violence is the only possible solution to bring justice. It is the only process that can remove power from authority and give it to the poor. I completely understand why we would riot but it will never achieve our longterm aims, and will only create further violence.

you know that word "alternative"??!
well, the word to me means something that is completely different. however, the 21st century has changed it irrevocably. you’ll see “alternative clubnights” advertised promising “the messiest night possible” completely unaware that this is so unalternative it literally hurts, “alternative” political parties that are completely indistinguishable from the...

Volunteering Week
Today I visited Exeter College, and spoke with students about my Lent so far. My favourite question…. “just what is the point?!”

The week of no carbon is done with...
As with every week that I’ve undertaken so far on this Lenten journey, I find myself in an entirely new position than the one I would have declared myself in previously. No Carbon has been difficult on a number of levels, but essentially what it has done has…
a) reminded me of how I never previously used a car (and rarely a bus or train) and…
b) made me reassess just how much I...

Cycling not Driving
Starting to realise just how alienating getting in a car is. Society thrives upon honest interaction and that simply doesn’t happen when we’re in our own metal box.
I’m so very out of practice with cycling, but am persevering!

The End of Week 3 and The Start of Week 4!
Greetings, I’ve returned to a land of corporations, high prices and shareholdings, also known as Exeter High Street! I must confess that I wasn’t quite sure how this week would transpire, but you know what? Corporations haven’t yet strangled all the life from this town. I shopped independently, avoid certain things and ate incredibly well, and much more healthily! So, I genuinely...

Lent Week 3 - No Corporations or Chain Stores
So, i return to technology to tell you that this week will involve no corporations, chain stores or anything with share holders!
This is actually going to be tough, but some parts will be impossible; here’s why!
Much of the UK’s state provisions have been privatised and taken over by corporations, and floated on the stock market. However, other versions of these provisions do not...

Lent Week 1- No Money!!!
The pancakes have settled; the superburger Alex made me at The Cavern Club is a distant memory, my credit and debit cards are gathering dust on a shelf; it can only mean one thing! Lent is here and my pledge must begin!
Week One is all about avoiding money; although the exchange of money for goods is an ancient tradition, it has to be noted that the issue of borrowing excessively is a truly 21st...

Lent and all that!
So, Lent fast approaches. I usually make some token gesture in the way of confectionary towards this season of abstinence, but this year i’m planning something different!
If you don’t know, Lent is the period of time before Easter that the Christian Church has used as a reminder of the hardships that Jesus went through before he was crucified, but also it is an opportunity to give up...

Day 9 - Mons to (almost) Exeter
Good morning England! Good morning Harold Hardragar, good morning Bet Lynch, good morning Kelly Holmes, good morning St Julien of Norwich! At 6am this morning, I woke up in Mons, Belgium, now I write you from the Kentish marshland where little Pip met Abel Magwitch! And of course, the sun shines on this weary band of travellers!
The journey we’ve taken this morning is the very same one...

Day 8 - Heiloo to Mons
I like Holland. I like it a lot. Leaving it this morning was hard. What will I miss the most? The American/Dutch accent? The remarkable record collections?! The excellent collection of pets that we met? Or the warmth in which we were greeted and saluted?! All of the above I reckon, but most of all, the Gouda sandwiches. Who wants to set up an import/export business?
Now, we’re back in...

Day 7 - Antwerp to Heilloo
The drive out of Belgium was somewhat more complicated without a satnav! I was charged with the map duties, but it turns out that the names of places were different on each of the 3 maps I was using! The band were so concerned, they almost stopped watching Seinfeld. Almost.
We got to North Holland through my Ray Mears style navigation, and made it to Rowald’s house- Rowald is the singer of...

Day 6 - Brussels to Antwerp
Where to start with the last 24 hours?! You might first want to read yesterday’s blog and my super positive mood to put what I’m writing now in perspective!
The Cut Ups went and had a wander around the medieval part of Brussels; a really amazing place! We couldn’t believe our luck to be here! We watched some of the Napoli/Fiorentina match in a bar, then trundled back to the...

Day 5 - Den Bosch to Brussels
Do you ever have days where you can’t believe how well everything goes? That day was yesterday, and friends, it sure did go well! Norbert our host, and his friend Jort fed us an extremely delicious dinner, not because they had put on the show, but simply because they thought they should! Top guys! The show last night was really top draw, a venue that was open plan; we opened up and got such...

Day 4 - The Hague to Den Bosch
When the good lord takes me off this mortal coil, and I am naught but dust, all I can hope heaven to be would be the djs from Cafe Du Vinger playing Reagan Youth, Dag Nasty and Blitz into my everlasting ears. Gerrit and his friends put on a top notch show- mention must go to Suicidal Taxi from Rotterdam, on their fifth show! The venue itself was a throwback to the John Tallack Centre, the...

Day 3 - Paris to The Hague
Chums, last nights show was a treat - the good people of Paris were good to us. Unfortunately, my use of words abandoned me, during a lengthy gap between songs due to an electrical problem, i resorted to shouting the 3 words that the French Republic was built on… “liberte”, “fraternite”, “egalite”. It was met with a further pause and a distinctly French...
